Black Algae vs. Green Algae: What’s the Difference and How to Get Rid of Them

If you've ever battled a green or black pool, you're not alone. Algae blooms are one of the most common problems pool owners face—especially in warm, sunny places like South Florida. But not all algae are created equal.

Let’s break down the difference between black algae and green algae, why they happen, and how to get rid of them for good.

□ Green Algae: The Usual Suspect

Green algae is the most common—and thankfully, the easiest—to remove. It spreads quickly and clouds up your water, turning your pool into a green, murky mess.

What Causes Green Algae?

  • Low chlorine levels
  • Poor circulation or filtration
  • High pH or unbalanced water
  • Heavy rain, debris, or high swimmer load

How to Get Rid of Green Algae

  1. Test and balance your water (especially chlorine and pH).
  2. Shock the pool with a high dose of chlorine or a commercial shock product.
  3. Brush walls and floor to dislodge algae.
  4. Vacuum to waste to avoid recycling spores.
  5. Run your pump continuously until water is clear.
  6. Backwash or clean your filter to remove algae residue.

Prevent it by maintaining sanitizer levels, brushing regularly, and keeping your filter clean.

□ Black Algae: The Stubborn Intruder

Black algae is not actually algae—it’s a type of cyanobacteria. It’s darker, more aggressive, and can be a nightmare to eliminate. It roots deep into porous surfaces like plaster and concrete, which makes it hard to kill with chlorine alone.

What Does Black Algae Look Like?

  • Dark black or blue-green spots, often clustered
  • Feels slimy and doesn’t brush off easily
  • Usually grows in shady or less circulated areas

How to Kill Black Algae (It’s a Process!)

  1. Test and balance water chemistry.
  2. Scrub with a stiff-bristle brush—you need to break through the protective layers.
  3. Apply a black algae-specific algaecide or high-strength chlorine directly to the affected area.
  4. Shock the pool—heavily. Multiple rounds may be needed.
  5. Brush and vacuum repeatedly over several days.
  6. Clean your filter thoroughly to prevent reinfestation.

Note: Even after treatment, black algae can return if roots are left behind. Regular brushing is key to prevention.

□ Key Differences at a Glance

Feature Green Algae Black Algae
Color Light green to dark green Black or dark blue-green
Texture Slimy, floats in water Slimy spots, rooted in surfaces
Speed of Growth Rapid, spreads in hours Slow-growing but stubborn
Removal Difficulty Moderate Very Difficult
Treatment Shock + brush + filtration Brush + algaecide + repeated shocks

☀️ Florida Pool Owners—Stay One Step Ahead

Both green and black algae thrive in warm, sunny climates like ours. High temps, UV rays, and year-round pool use make South Florida pools more vulnerable. That’s why consistent professional maintenance is key.

At Sparkling Pools Service & Repair, we know exactly how to treat and prevent algae blooms—before they take over your pool.
