Different Types of Pool Filters: Which One is Best for Your Pool? Can You Switch Between Them?

When it comes to keeping your pool crystal clear, your filter is the unsung hero. But not all filters are created equal! Let’s break down the three main types of pool filters--Sand, DE (Diatomaceous Earth), and Cartridge—so you can decide which is best for your pool.

And if you’re wondering whether you can switch from one type to another—like moving from a sand or DE filter to a cartridge system—we’ll cover that, too!

Sand Filters

Pros:

  • Affordable upfront cost
  • Easy to operate and backwash
  • Durable and long-lasting

Cons:

  • Least efficient at filtering tiny particles (filters down to ~20 microns)
  • Requires backwashing, which uses extra water
  • Not ideal for pools needing super-fine filtration

Best For: Homeowners wanting low-cost, low-maintenance filtering and who don’t mind slightly lower water clarity.

DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters

Pros:

  • Best filtration capability (filters down to ~2-5 microns)
  • Crystal-clear water quality
  • Handles high bather loads well

Cons:

  • Higher upfront cost
  • More maintenance-intensive (requires cleaning and replenishing DE powder)
  • DE powder can be messy and requires careful handling

Maintenance Tip: After each backwash (usually about once a month), you need to add approximately 80% of the recommended DE powder amount back into the filter. A full DE powder replacement should be done at least once a year to maintain optimal filtration.

Best For: Pool owners demanding top-tier water clarity, especially in areas prone to fine debris or heavy pool usage.

Cartridge Filters

Pros:

  • Excellent filtration (filters down to ~10 microns)
  • No backwashing—saves water
  • Lower ongoing maintenance cost (just hose off cartridges)
  • Compact and space-saving design

Cons:

  • Higher upfront cost than sand filters
  • Cartridges need replacement about every year to a year and a half, depending on usage and water conditions
  • Not ideal for extremely large pools with high debris loads

Best For: Owners looking for great water clarity, eco-friendly operation (water savings), and easy maintenance.

Can You Switch from Sand or DE to a Cartridge Filter?

Yes, you can!

Many pool owners choose to upgrade to a cartridge filter because:

  • It saves water (no backwashing)
  • It provides better filtration than sand
  • It’s often easier to maintain

However, keep in mind:

  • Your plumbing may need adjustments to fit a different filter style.
  • The filter size must match your pool volume and pump capacity to avoid flow issues.
  • A professional pool technician should evaluate your system before making the change.

Thinking about switching filters? Our team at Sparkling Pools can inspect your setup and recommend the best solution for your pool’s size and needs.

Pro Tip: If your current filter is older, upgrading could also improve your pool’s energy efficiency and reduce chemical costs by maintaining cleaner water.
