New Pool Finish? Here’s How to Care for It So It Lasts

Resurfacing your pool is one of the best ways to give your backyard a fresh, beautiful look. But did you know a new pool finish requires special care—especially in the first few weeks? Whether you choose plaster, quartz, pebble, or tile, proper maintenance is key to keeping your pool finish looking great and lasting as long as possible.

Here’s what every South Florida pool owner should know about caring for a brand-new pool surface—and how to keep it sparkling for years to come.

General Tips Right After Resurfacing

No matter which finish you choose, follow these rules for the first 30 days after your pool is resurfaced:

  • Run your pump and filter continuously for at least the first 72 hours.
  • Brush the entire pool daily to remove plaster dust or loose particles.
  • Keep chemicals balanced—especially pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness.
  • Avoid swimming until your pool professional gives you the green light.
  • Don’t add salt to a salt system right away—most manufacturers require a waiting period of 30 days.

Let’s look at what’s unique for each type of finish.

---

Plaster (Marcite) Finishes

Special Care After Installation:

  • Plaster dust is normal for the first week or two. Brush daily to prevent buildup.
  • Maintain a lower calcium hardness level initially to avoid scaling.
  • Check pH daily—it can spike in new plaster pools and needs adjustment.

Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Keep pH between 7.4 and 7.6 to prevent etching or scaling.
  • Test and balance water weekly.
  • Consider regular professional acid washes every few years to restore appearance.

Why It Matters: Plaster is beautiful but more sensitive than other finishes. Early water balance is crucial to avoid permanent discoloration or rough texture.

---

Quartz Finishes

Special Care After Installation:

  • Expect less plaster dust than plain marcite, but still brush daily for at least 10-14 days.
  • Keep pH stable to avoid color mottling.
  • Avoid heavy pool use for the first two weeks to let the surface cure properly.

Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Maintain calcium hardness around 200-400 ppm to protect the finish.
  • Use a sequestering agent if your water has high metals to prevent staining.
  • Brush weekly to keep quartz particles shining and surface clean.

Why It Matters: Quartz finishes are more durable than plaster but still need careful water balance to preserve color and texture over the years.

---

Pebble Finishes

Special Care After Installation:

  • Brush thoroughly every day for at least two weeks to remove loosened pebbles and dust.
  • Control pH and alkalinity to avoid scale formation on pebble surfaces.
  • Delay salt system startup for at least 30 days.

Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Maintain calcium hardness levels between 200-400 ppm to prevent etching.
  • Use a stain and scale preventative regularly.
  • Schedule periodic professional cleaning or bead blasting to refresh the finish every few years.

Why It Matters: Pebble finishes are very durable but can collect scale and stains if water chemistry isn’t controlled. Proper brushing and water care protect the texture and color.

---

Tile Finishes

Special Care After Installation:

  • Tile itself cures quickly, but grout may require time to set fully. Avoid heavy use for at least 7 days.
  • Monitor grout lines for early signs of discoloration or cracking.

Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Keep pH and calcium balanced to protect grout from erosion.
  • Use a soft brush to clean tiles regularly, preventing calcium deposits.
  • Consider periodic professional cleaning to remove stubborn scale or buildup.

Why It Matters: Tile finishes are incredibly durable, but grout is the weak point. Regular maintenance ensures your tiles stay beautiful and intact for decades.
