Pool Filter Trouble? 5 Signs It’s Time to Clean or Replace It

Your pool filter is one of the hardest-working pieces of equipment in your entire system. Without it, your water would quickly become cloudy, dirty, and unsafe to swim in. But how do you know when your pool filter needs cleaning—or worse, replacing?

Here are five signs it’s time to give your filter some attention, plus why using the right replacement matters more than you think.

1. Water Pressure Is Too High or Too Low

Your pool's pressure gauge tells you a lot. If the pressure is significantly higher than normal, it usually means your filter is dirty or clogged. If it's too low, it could mean a broken gauge, suction issue, or pump problem—but a dirty or damaged filter can also be the culprit.

2. Water Is Cloudy or Dirty

If your pool water stays cloudy or you notice fine debris floating around—even after you've cleaned it—your filter may not be doing its job. It could be time to clean or replace the filter media, or the filter cartridge itself may be worn out.

3. Increased Need for Chemicals

When your filter isn't removing dirt and particles properly, your sanitizer has to work harder. If you're going through chlorine faster than usual or can't seem to maintain balanced water, a failing filter could be part of the problem.

4. Visible Damage or Wear

Inspect your filter cartridge, DE grids, or sand carefully. If you see cracks, holes, frayed edges, or damage to the internal structure, it's time for a replacement. Worn filters can allow debris to pass right through into your pool.

5. Filter Cleaning Doesn’t Help

If you’ve cleaned your filter but the issues persist—poor flow, cloudy water, or high pressure—there’s a good chance the filter media is no longer effective. Over time, filters lose their ability to trap fine particles, even with regular maintenance.

Types of Pool Filters Used in In-Ground Pools in South Florida

In South Florida, most in-ground pools use one of these three types of filters:

  • Cartridge Filters: These are popular for their ease of maintenance and are common in residential pools. They offer good filtration and are ideal for our warmer climate where year-round pool use is typical.
  • DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters: Known for the best filtration quality, these use fine DE powder to trap the smallest particles. They're often used in larger or higher-end pools.
  • Sand Filters: These are durable and simple to use but don’t filter quite as finely as DE or cartridge types. They're still widely used due to low maintenance needs and long lifespan.

No matter which type you have, proper maintenance and knowing when to replace parts is essential for keeping your pool clean and efficient.

Why the Brand of Your Replacement Filter Matters

We get it—generic filter cartridges are tempting. They often look similar to brand-name versions and cost less. But here’s the truth: off-brand filters usually use lower-quality materials, have less surface area, and wear out faster. This can result in poor filtration, higher energy use, and even damage to your pool system.

Using the original manufacturer’s replacement filter ensures:

  • Proper fit and seal
  • Correct surface area for your system’s flow rate
  • Higher-quality materials that last longer
  • Consistent, reliable performance

At Sparkling Pools, we always recommend using original filters to protect your equipment and your water quality—especially in South Florida’s year-round swim climate.

Not Sure If It’s Time to Replace Your Filter?

If you’re seeing cloudy water, poor circulation, or rising pressure—even after a filter cleaning—it’s a good idea to have your system inspected.
