Pool Heater Troubleshooting Guide: What to Check Before Calling a Pro

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting ready for a relaxing swim—only to find your pool heater isn’t working. Whether you have a gas heater or an electric heat pump, issues can pop up for a variety of reasons.

Before you call for service, here are some basic troubleshooting tips to try. You might be able to fix the issue yourself—or at least identify the problem so you know what to expect.

□ For Gas Pool Heaters

Gas heaters are powerful and fast, but they can be a little picky. Here’s what to check:

✅ 1. Check the Pilot Light (If Applicable)

Older gas heaters have a pilot light that can go out due to wind or rain. If it’s out, try relighting it carefully following the manufacturer’s instructions.

✅ 2. Verify the Gas Supply

Is the gas valve turned on? Check your gas meter and ensure there’s no interruption in service (especially after storms or nearby construction). Propane users—make sure your tank isn’t empty.

✅ 3. Inspect for Error Codes

Many modern gas heaters have digital displays. If it’s showing an error code, check the manual or search the code online. If you're not sure what the error code means, don’t guess--give us a call and we'll help you figure it out.

✅ 4. Listen for Clicking

Hear clicking but no ignition? It could be a faulty igniter or flame sensor.

✅ 5. Check the Filter & Water Flow

Low water flow can prevent a heater from turning on. Clean your filter and skimmer basket, and make sure your pump is running properly.

⚡ For Electric Pool Heaters (Heat Pumps)

Electric heat pumps are energy-efficient, but they rely on warm ambient air and steady flow. Here's what to look at:

✅ 1. Check the Breaker & Power Supply

Make sure your pool heater’s breaker hasn’t tripped. Reset it if needed and check any timer settings or fuses.

✅ 2. Check for Water Flow Issues

Just like with gas heaters, restricted flow due to dirty filters or closed valves can prevent your electric heater from kicking on.

✅ 3. Inspect the Thermostat

Sometimes the issue is as simple as the thermostat being set too low. Bump it up a few degrees and see if it turns on.

✅ 4. Is It Too Cold Outside?

Electric heat pumps need warm ambient air to function. If the outside temperature drops below 50°F, most units won’t run efficiently—or at all.

✅ 5. Check for Error Messages

Look for digital display codes. Common ones include low flow, high pressure, or sensor malfunctions. Not sure what your code means? Give us a call—we’ll point you in the right direction.

□ General Tips for All Pool Heaters

  • Make sure your pump is on and primed.
  • Always check your filter pressure—a dirty filter = low flow.
  • Don’t ignore unusual noises or smells—these are signs it’s time to call a professional.

□️ Still Not Working? It Might Be Time for a Replacement

If your pool heater is over 8–10 years old, needs frequent repairs, or you’re noticing skyrocketing energy bills, it may be time to consider replacing it.

And now is the perfect time—upgrading your pool heater in the fall means you can enjoy warm water all winter long. No waiting. No downtime.
