Top 5 Pool Problems We See in Summer — And How to Prevent Them

South Florida summers mean more sunshine, more swimming, and unfortunately — more pool problems. At Sparkling Pools Service & Repair, we’ve seen it all. These are the top issues that come through our doors each summer, along with tips to avoid them.

1. Algae Blooms (aka the Green Monster)

That green, slimy surprise can take over fast in our hot, humid climate. Algae thrives when chlorine levels drop or when the water isn’t circulating properly — especially after heavy rain or storms.

Pro tip: Keep chlorine at 2.0–4.0 ppm and shock weekly in the summer. Brush the pool walls often. If your pool turns green, clearing it without draining starts at $300 and can go up to $800 depending on the size.

2. Clogged or Dirty Filters

Rain, leaves, and sunscreen can clog your filter fast, making your water cloudy and reducing circulation. Many homeowners don’t realize their filter is overdue for a cleaning until problems appear.

Pro tip: Clean your filter every 2 weeks in the summer. We recommend Pentair cartridge filters for their durability and efficiency. Watch your pressure gauge — if it rises 8–10 psi over normal, it’s time to clean or replace the cartridge.

3. Low Water Levels

Evaporation happens fast in South Florida. Add in a few kids cannonballing daily and your water level can drop below the skimmer before you notice — risking pump burnout.

Pro tip: Check water levels twice a week. Set a hose timer or install an auto-fill system. If your water level drops more than 1/4 inch a day, it could be a leak. We offer pool leak detection and repair throughout Miami Lakes and surrounding areas.

4. Malfunctioning Pool Pumps

Summer is peak pool pump season. Long hours and high heat strain your motor and seals. If you hear strange noises or see air bubbles in the return lines, don’t ignore it — your pump could be on its last leg.

Pro tip: Clean the pump basket weekly and ensure proper water flow. If your pump is more than 5–7 years old, schedule an inspection to avoid surprise breakdowns.

5. Unbalanced Pool Water

Rain, UV rays, body oils, and pool chemicals all throw off your pool’s balance. Imbalanced water leads to irritation, staining, and faster equipment wear.

Pro tip: Test your water once a week. We offer free in-store water testing to help you keep your pool safe and sparkling.
