Top Pool Myths in South Florida—Busted!

In South Florida, having a pool isn’t just a luxury—it’s a lifestyle. But over the years, we’ve heard plenty of pool advice that’s just not true. Whether it’s from a neighbor, social media, or a well-meaning friend, misinformation can lead to damage, expensive repairs, or wasted money.

At Sparkling Pools Service & Repair, we’re here to set the record straight. Let’s bust the most common pool myths we hear from Miami-Dade and Broward pool owners.

Myth #1: If the water looks clear, it must be clean

Busted: Clear water doesn’t mean safe water. You can’t see bacteria, imbalanced chemicals, or algae spores. Your pool could look crystal clear and still have poor water chemistry that damages your surfaces and equipment—or worse, irritates your skin and eyes.

Truth: Regular testing and chemical balancing are key. Clear water is just step one.

Myth #2: Saltwater pools don’t use chlorine

Busted: This one’s super common. Saltwater pools do use chlorine—they just generate it differently. A salt cell converts salt into chlorine through electrolysis, which still sanitizes your water.

Truth: You’re still using chlorine—just in a different form. And yes, you still need to test and maintain it.

Myth #3: Testing your pool water once a week is enough

Busted: South Florida’s heat, rain, and bather load can change your water chemistry fast. One test a week might not catch issues early enough—especially in the summer.

Truth: Test 2–3 times a week during peak season, especially if your pool is used frequently or after heavy rains.

Myth #4: It’s better to run your pump at night to save energy

Busted: This advice might apply in cooler climates, but not in South Florida. Running your pump at night can actually increase algae growth here. Our intense sun fuels algae during the day—if your water isn’t circulating and getting chlorinated, it becomes a breeding ground.

Truth: Run your pump during the day for at least 8 hours, preferably 12, especially in the summer. This helps keep chlorine levels stable and algae under control.

Myth #5: You only need to shock your pool when it looks cloudy

Busted: Waiting until your pool looks bad to shock it means you’ve already fallen behind. Regular shocking helps kill bacteria, break down contaminants, and maintain clean, healthy water—even when it looks fine.

Truth: Shock your pool weekly during the summer or after heavy use to prevent issues before they start.
