Why Is My Pool Losing Water? Evaporation vs. Leaks (And What to Do About It)

Living in sunny South Florida means your pool gets plenty of use — and with that comes an important question many homeowners ask:
“Why is my pool water level dropping?”

Is it normal evaporation... or something more serious like a leak? Let’s break it down and help you figure out what’s going on in your backyard.

How Much Pool Water Loss Is Normal?

In hot, humid climates like Miami Lakes, evaporation can cause your pool to lose ¼ to ½ inch of water per day, especially during dry, windy weeks. You might also see more loss if you’re running waterfalls, pool heaters, or have lots of sun exposure.

Here’s what counts as “normal”:

  • Up to 2 inches per week in the summer
  • Slight increase with more pool usage or splashing
  • Lower water loss in cooler months

If you’re seeing more than that — you may have a leak.

Signs You Might Have a Pool Leak (Not Evaporation)

Watch for these signs:

  • Water loss over 2 inches per week
  • Constantly needing to add water
  • Wet spots or sinkholes around the pool
  • Cracks in the pool surface or deck
  • Air bubbles in return lines or strange gurgling sounds
  • Skyrocketing water bills

Even a small leak can waste hundreds of gallons a day and throw off your pool's chemical balance.

The Bucket Test: Quick DIY Leak Check

Want to test if it’s just evaporation? Try this:

  1. Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on the pool step so water inside and outside are level.
  2. Mark the water level inside the bucket and on the pool wall.
  3. Wait 24–48 hours (with the pump off).
  4. Compare water levels — if the pool drops more than the bucket, you likely have a leak.
