WHY POOL JETS STOP WORKING (AND THE FIX PROS WON’T TELL YOU)

If your pool jets feel weak or your water isn't circulating like it used to, you're not alone. Many South Florida pool owners deal with sluggish jets and cloudy water—especially during peak swim season. But what causes this frustrating problem, and why does it seem to sneak up out of nowhere?

Let’s dive into the real reasons your pool jets lose power and the steps you can take to get your water flowing strong again—before it becomes a bigger issue.

1. CLOGGED FILTER OR FULL SKIMMER BASKET

If your pool filter is dirty or your skimmer basket is full of leaves and debris, it restricts water flow. Less water reaching your pump means less pressure coming through your jets.

2. LOW WATER LEVEL

When water levels drop too low—especially after evaporation or heavy use—the skimmer can suck in air instead of water. This reduces circulation and pressure through the system.

3. AIR LEAKS IN THE SUCTION LINE

Even a small air leak at the pump lid, valves, or fittings can reduce jet strength. Look for bubbles coming out of the jets or inside the pump basket as signs of air in the system.

4. WORN OR CLOGGED IMPELLER

The impeller is the part of your pump that pushes water. Over time it can wear down or get blocked by small debris, especially if the pump is running without a proper strainer basket.

5. POOL CLEANER AFFECTING FLOW

If your pool cleaner stays stuck in a corner or barely moves, it could be putting unnecessary strain on the system, stealing power from the jets. This is often a sign of a clogged hose, faulty diaphragm, or incorrect valve settings.

6. FILTER TYPE & REPLACEMENT CARTRIDGE QUALITY

In South Florida, most in-ground pools use either cartridge, DE (diatomaceous earth), or sand filters. If you use a cartridge filter, choosing a cheap off-brand replacement can drastically reduce water flow. Always opt for the original manufacturer’s replacement cartridge to maintain proper performance.

WHAT TO DO NEXT

✅ Check and clean your filter and skimmer basket regularly.
✅ Keep your water level at the midpoint of the skimmer opening.
✅ Inspect for air leaks around the pump and suction lines.
✅ Use quality filter replacements—especially with cartridge systems.
✅ If problems persist, call your local pool professional for a full system inspection.

Weak jets are more than just an annoyance—they're often the first sign that your pool circulation system needs attention. Catching and fixing it early can save you time, money, and a whole lot of poolside frustration.
