Why Your Pool Tile Keeps Getting Black Lines

Black lines on pool tile drive homeowners crazy. They’re stubborn, they look dirty even when the rest of the pool is spotless, and they always come back if you don’t fix the actual cause.

The good news? Black lines are extremely common — and 99% of the time, they come from a small handful of issues that are easy to understand once they’re explained clearly.

This guide breaks down each cause, how to tell which one you’re dealing with, and how to stop the black lines from returning.

What Are the Black Lines on Pool Tile?

They are almost always one of these:

  • Metal staining
  • Algae trapped in grout or porous tile
  • Dirt and oils collecting at the waterline
  • Filter or circulation issues
  • Calcium scaling with embedded debris

Every cause looks a little different, and the fix depends on the root issue — not just scrubbing harder.

1. Metal Staining (Very Common in Florida)

If the black (or dark brown) line is thin, sharp, and comes back quickly, it may be metal staining.

Most common metal sources:

  • Iron in fill water
  • Old pool equipment
  • Rusting rails or screws
  • Well water
  • Old heater cores
  • Fertilizer overspray

How to identify:

  • Stain does NOT smear when rubbed
  • Stain reacts to a vitamin C tablet
  • Tile looks “etched” or tinted rather than dirty

How to fix:
• Use a metal treatment specifically for pools
• Remove iron from the water (if present)
• Treat with a high-quality sequestrant (pool store, not big-box stores)
• Prevent long-term staining with weekly maintenance

2. Algae in Grout or Porous Tile

If the black line looks almost like a stripe inside the grout or edges of the tile, it’s likely black algae embedded deep in the pores.

How to identify:

  • Feels rough, not slimy
  • Appears inside the tile or grout
  • Scrubbing fades it but doesn’t remove it fully
  • Shock alone does nothing

How to fix:
• Scrub with a stiff brush
• Use a professional-grade algaecide (non-foaming)
• Maintain circulation and chlorine levels
• Severe cases may require acid washing or professional treatment

3. Dirt, Body Oils & Sunscreen Buildup

This is the most common cause, especially during warm months. Oils, lotions, and dirt float and stick right at the waterline — creating a dark ring. When the waterline shifts, the “ring” can look like black lines.

How to identify:

  • Wipes off with your finger
  • Smears easily
  • Worse during summer or heavy use
  • Looks darkest near steps and shallow areas

How to fix:
• Clean tile weekly with tile soap or a degreaser
• Add enzymes to break down oils and lotions
• Maintain proper filtration
• Reduce heavy sunscreen residue in the pool

4. Circulation or Filter Issues

Weak circulation causes dirt and oils to settle in the same spot every day — creating predictable black lines.

Signs this is the issue:

  • Tile is clean on one side but dirty on the other
  • Pump isn’t running long enough
  • Dirty filter
  • Low return flow
  • Clogged skimmer

Fixes:
• Clean the filter
• Increase pump runtime
• Adjust return eyeballs
• Improve surface flow in shallow areas

5. Calcium Scale with Trapped Dirt

Sometimes the black “line” is actually calcium scale that has trapped dirt, making it appear dark.

How to identify:

  • Very hard to the touch
  • Feels like rough white or tan deposits
  • Dark line appears inside the scale
  • Acid test bubbles slightly

Fix:
• Use scale remover
• Professional acid wash if severe
• Correct pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness to prevent return

How to Prevent Black Lines from Returning

1. Keep pH and alkalinity balanced
High pH causes scale, low pH causes metal issues.

2. Clean the waterline weekly
Use a soft brush or tile cleaner.

3. Use enzymes during heavy swim season
They break down oils and lotions before they stick.

4. Maintain good circulation
Returns should push water across the surface, not straight down.

5. Check metals regularly
Especially if you use well water or have older equipment.

6. Don’t skip filter cleanings
Dirty filters recirculate debris that sticks to tile.

Sparkling Pools Tips

  • Black lines always have a root cause — not just “dirty tile.”
  • Oils and sunscreen create the fastest buildup.
  • Metals cause the most stubborn stains.
  • Algae hides in grout where chemicals can’t reach.
  • Fix the cause once, and the lines stop returning.

Final Thoughts

Black lines on pool tile are annoying, but they’re completely fixable once you identify the cause. Whether it’s metals, oils, algae, scaling, or weak circulation, the solution starts with proper water balance and consistent cleaning.

If the stains keep coming back or you're not sure what type of buildup you're dealing with, we’re happy to take a look and recommend the best treatment.
